Gamecocks Enter Match Play as No. 3 Seed in Athens
ATHENS, Ga. – No. 10 South Carolina women’s golf finished the stroke-play portion of The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in third place with a score of 295 (+7), qualifying the Gamecocks for the “red” bracket in match play that begins on Friday morning at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
Carolina will be the No. 3 seed, and will take on No. 6 seed Ole Miss in the first round of the match play portion of the three-day event.
Augusta and Kennesaw State each finished at 290 (+2), with Augusta earning the No. 1 seed via having a lower drop score. Kennesaw State’s Chloe Thornton carded two eagles during her round to finish as the individual co-leader. Following the Gamecocks’ third-place standing were Louisville (297, +9) and Arkansas (297, +9), with Arkansas earning the No. 4 seed over Louisville due to having a higher Golfstat ranking (drop scores were identical). The rest of the “red” bracket consists of Georgia (299, +11), Ole Miss (299, +11) and Florida (302, +14). Ole Miss earned the No. 6 seed over Georgia by virtue of a better Golfstat ranking (drop scores were identical).
South Carolina freshman Emily Price continued to put on a display for the Gamecocks, carding three birdies to finish in a tie for seventh with a 1-over 73. Along with Price in a tie for seventh is junior Ana Pelaez. Using four birdies, including two in the final three holes, Pelaez was able to finish with a 1-under 35 on the back nine on her way to her 73.
Carolina’s lone senior, Marion Veysseyre, connected on three birdies in a five-hole stretch right around the turn to help her finish in a tie for 15th during the stroke play round. In a tie for 23rd are Lois Kaye Go and Anita Uwadia. Both of the juniors carded a 3-over 75, with Uwadia finishing with a pair of birdies while Go sank three.
The Gamecocks will be the fourth match on Friday morning, teeing off at 8:42 a.m. from the par-4 10th. For a full schedule of match play, click here.
