No. 9 Gamecocks to Take Part in Evans Derby Experience
COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 9 South Carolina women’s golf will travel to Opelika, Ala., for the Evans Derby Experience, hosted by Auburn University at the Saugahatchee Country Club. The 54-hole event is from March 23-25 and features 14 teams.
“I just want to continue our momentum,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Anderson said. “We’ve had a really good couple of weeks and had a really good finish at the [Darius Rucker Intercollegiate]. We want to keep everyone moving in the right direction, and this will be another really strong field. We want to go out there and keep building toward our postseason.”
The tournament will be set up as a par-72 and spans 7,040 yards from the back tees. Check back later for official pairings and tee times.
The Gamecocks are playing in the Evans Derby Experience for the second-consecutive year and their sixth appearance overall. Last season, Carolina finished in sixth place with Lois Kaye Go finishing in the top 20.
The field includes five of the top-10 teams in the country. The teams are Texas (No. 2), Duke (No. 3), Florida (No. 7), Arkansas (No. 8), South Carolina (No. 9), Florida State (No. 11), Auburn (No. 13), Kent State (No. 14), Alabama (No. 18), Clemson (No. 22), Louisville (No. 30), Baylor (No. 38), Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
Nine of Golfstat’s top-20 individuals will be in the 2019 Evans Derby Experience, including South Carolina’s own Emily Price (No. 13) and Go (No. 14).
South Carolina is coming off its best finish at the 2019 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, finishing in a tie for second at Long Cove Club on Hilton Head Island, S.C. Go finished in the top 10 for the fourth-straight tournament, closing with two birdies in the final three holes to end near the top of the leaderboard.
The remainder of the Gamecocks’ starting five each had at least one round to hang their hat on during the 2019 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. Price sank three straight birdies on the back-nine on her way to a 70 (-1) in the first round, helping the Gamecocks to the lead at the conclusion of round one. Senior Marion Veysseyre was just one shot off the lead after the opening round as she posted a 69 (-2) with four birdies. Junior Anita Uwadia finished even in her opening round, and Ana Pelaez posted a 1-under 70 with 17 pars in her final round at Long Cove Club.
Go’s 2018-19 season average (72.38) currently sits as the fourth best in program history (Min. 18 rounds). As a team this season, the Gamecocks have averaged 292.61, the third best in program history (Min. 15 rounds).
