Cherotich Earns All-SEC Second Team at SEC Cross Country Championship

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Nov. 1, 2024) – South Carolina Cross Country concluded the 2024 SEC Cross Country Championship on Friday morning, highlighted by an All-SEC Second Team performance from Teresa Cherotich. As a team, the Gamecocks finished 14th overall with 312 points, despite all 12 runners setting new personal bests and the top seven Gamecock finishers running Top-20 times in program history.

Cherotich turned in the second fastest 6K time in Gamecock history, running 19:42.8 to place 14th overall on the individual leaderboard. With her 14th-place finish, the Kenya product earned a spot on the All-SEC Second Team. In addition, Cherotich was the third fastest freshman in the field, earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team. This is the second consecutive year that the Gamecocks have placed a runner on both the All-SEC and All-Freshman squads.

The next two scorers for Carolina were also freshmen in Mary Frances Iseman and Cate Conklin. Iseman posted a time of 20:38.0 to finish 69th overall with the fourth fastest 6K in program history, while Conklin clocked 20:38.8 for the fifth fastest 6K in Gamecock history to finish 71st overall.

Sophomore runners Anya Arroyo and Emma Torbert were the final two scorers for the Gamecocks on Friday as Arroyo ran 20:45.8 and Torbert clocked 20:52.0. Arroyo’s time was the 10th fastest time in program history as she finished 85th overall, while Torbert finished 91st overall with the 11th fastest 6K in Gamecock history.

Alabama won the team title with 72 points, led by Doris Lemngole who captured the individual title after running 18:20.3. Tennessee finished runner-up with 103 points, followed by Florida in third with 122 points.

South Carolina will now compete for a spot in the NCAA Championship as the Gamecocks hope to qualify in their next meet at the NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday, Nov. 15. This year’s Southeast Regional will be held in Rock Hill, S.C.
