Gamecocks Fall in Sun Belt Tournament Quarterfinals

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The fifth-seeded South Carolina men’s soccer team (10-5-2) fell to No. 4 seed Kentucky (6-5-6) 1-0 Sunday night (Nov. 10) in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Kentucky led the night 11-to-6 in shots, 5-to-1 in shots on goal, and 14-to-7 in corner kicks. Carolina goalkeeper Filip Versterre finished with four saves in the match.

As heavy rain fell throughout the match, shots were limited in the first half. The Gamecocks held a 4-3 shots advantage in the opening 45 minutes.

Carolina had an opportunity in the 20th minute when it was awarded a penalty kick after Martin Yahia was taken down inside the box. Yahia was unable to convert on the penalty, as the UK goalkeeper made the save.

The Wildcats would be awarded a penalty kick of their own in the 64th minute, but they would convert on it for the lone goal of the match.
