Victoria Harris Named SEC Freshman of the Week
COLUMBIA, S.C. – University of South Carolina libero Victoria Harris has been selected as the SEC’s Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. The Columbia, S.C. native had a career night lead to a new program high-water mark in a five-set win on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at LSU.
The young defender had 27 digs over the five sets in Baton Rouge, the most in a single game by any freshman Gamecock in the rally-scoring era and the ninth-highest total overall. The big night also set a season record for most digs by a freshman in the program’s rally-scoring era, her new total of 334 moved past Aubrey Ezell’s 2015 record of 309. Wednesday’s win at LSU was Harris’ fourth game with 20 or more digs so far this fall. She is tied with five other Gamecocks for the fifth-most 20-digs matches in a single season since 1993, but she is the only freshman on the list. Her efforts on defense and in serve-receive helped the Gamecocks hit .343 as a team, the second-highest for a five-set match in program history, behind only a .357 percentage against Arkansas on Nov. 23, 2012.
Entering the week, Harris has started every game as the team’s libero and averages 4.18 digs per set, fifth-most in the SEC, with a .966 serve reception percentage over 298 total receptions. She has four 20-dig games this fall, something not done by a Gamecock freshman since the program joined the SEC in 1991.
Harris is the second Gamecock to earn a weekly award from the conference this fall, joining Riley Whitesides (Offensive Player of the Week) on Sept. 23. The last Gamecock to earn Freshman of the Week honors was Lauren McCutcheon during the 2021 season.
