Olivia Thompson Named 5A South Carolina Player of the Year
Gamecock signee picks up recognition heading into state championship games.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball signee Olivia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington HS) was named the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association Class 5A Player of the Year, the organization announced this week. One of five members of the Gamecocks’ No. 1 ranked 2019 signing class, Thompson is the highest scorer in Lexington High School history with 1,895 points heading into Monday’s state tournament quarterfinals.
Thompson is among the most prolific outside shooters in South Carolina girls’ basketball history. Her 105 made 3s as a junior are second all-time in the state to Ivory Latta’s 165 in 2002-03.
This season, Thompson averages 19.5 points on 50.4 percent shooting. From the 3-point line, she hast shot 40.4 percent this season. In addition to her scoring, the 5-foot-8 guard averages 2.1 assists and 2.6 steals. Her SCBCA All-State selection this season is her second in as many years.
