Columbia, S.C. – Emily Turgeon’s goal at 19:24 of the first period was enough to lift Furman to a 1-0 victory over the South Carolina women’s soccer team. The loss drops USC’s record to 0-2 on the season, with Furman improving to 1-1 on the year.
Turgeon broke in on a pass from midfielder Tara Marker and was able to knock a shot from eight yards out to the left corner, beating USC goalkeeper Elise Matthews for the lone goal of the match. Matthews played the entire 90 minutes for Carolina and finished with two saves.
“We came out flat tonight and showed a lack of determination that was there from our first game,” said USC head coach Shelley Smith. “We have to learn from it, we can’t just play when we want to. I think that comes with some players taking some leadership roles and making sure they step it up on the field.”
Both teams finished the night with nine shots with Turgeon leading both teams with five. Freshman midfielder Shelly Hoddeson led the Gamecocks with four. Hoddeson and freshman forward Jessi Swaim each had a close opportunity in the middle of the second half to knot the game at one. Both Hoddeson and Swaim came within 10 yards of putting in the tying goal with two Lady Paladin defenders stepping up in the box to make team saves. Furman goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw also played the full 90 minutes and had two saves to earn her first victory of the season.
The Gamecocks continue the three-game homestand on Friday, September 5 with a 7 p.m. match vs. Charleston Southern. Carolina closes out the weekend on Sunday, September 7 vs. Dartmouth at 1 p.m.
“Having two home matches is a great opportunity for us to turn this around,” said Coach Smith.
