Gudjonsson, Mayr named CoSIDA Academic All-District
Fifth time in past six seasons Gamecocks have multiple honorees
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Senior Bjorn Gudjonsson and junior Luca Mayr were named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District 4 Men’s Soccer Team on Thursday. The team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
With their selection, the duo will now be placed on the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. The three Academic All-American teams will be announced in December.
Gudjonsson finished his Gamecock career scoring 24 points (11G, 2A) in 49 games played. He was a part of two NCAA Tournament teams (2015, 2016), leading the Gamecocks in goals (8) as a sophomore. Gudjonsson missed all of last season with a hip injury. He scored his first goal since getting hurt in the team’s match against No. 3 Kentucky (Sept. 29) this year. It was one of just eight goals all season given up by the Wildcats, who rank fourth national in goals against average (0.459).
The Reykjavik, Iceland, native boasts a 3.75 GPA as a finance major in the Darla Moore School of Business. He’s on track to graduate in December.
Mayr, who was recently named Second Team All-Conference USA, led the team in points (11) this season for the second consecutive year. He scored four goals (two game-winners) and had three assists. He’s started all 54 games his first three seasons at Carolina, scoring 38 points (13G, 12A). The Steyr, Austria, native was also named to the 11-member, C-USA All-Academic Team earlier in the week. Mayr, a finance major, sports a 3.56 cumulative GPA.
Gudjonsson and Mayr have helped the Gamecocks to the highest team GPA in C-USA the past two seasons. Both players are first-time honorees on the Academic All-District 4 Team. It marks the fifth time in the past six seasons Carolina has had multiple representatives on the team.
