South Carolina volunteer assistant track coach Allen Johnson has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after capturing the 110m hurdles title at the 2003 IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Johnson is coached by USC head coach Curtis Frye.
With his fourth career World 110m hurdles crown, Johnson became the greatest 110m hurdler in World Championships history. He led the 2003 event final from start to finish crossing the finish line with a time of 13.12 seconds ahead of USC alum and training partner Terrence Trammell, who placed second. Johnson won the 1996 Olympic gold medal and claimed world titles in 1995, 1997 and 2001. He has been ranked as the world’s top 110m hurdler for much of 2003.
Johnson’s USATF award is his second national weekly honor of the year after earning accolades on July 8 and marks the third recipient of 2003 with USC ties. Trammell was named USATF Athlete of the Week on Feb. 18.
