Men’s Tennis With Strong Open in Gamecock Fall Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis kicked off its fall season with a home tournament featuring 97 student-athletes from 19 universities across the country. On the first day of action, which featured two rounds of singles and one of doubles, the Gamecocks tallied 15 wins, including senior Yancy Dennis advancing to the quarterfinals of Flight A singles.

In doubles matches to start the morning on Friday, four freshmen led the way with Jake Beasley and Joseph Brailovsky teaming up for a hard-fought 9-8 win over East Carolina’s Diogo Marques and Vlad Anghel. Another freshman tandem Patrick Cacciatore and Beau Pelletier cruised past Santiago Suarez and Pascal Wagemaker of Georgia Southern 8-4.

On a busy day of singles, the Gamecocks’ freshmen dominated Flight B and Dennis led the way in Flight A. Pelletier, Cacciatore, Beasley and Brailovsky worked their way into the Flight B quarterfinals. Cacciatore withstood the lone challenge for the quartet, pushing past East Carolina’s Simon Lubbe in three sets in the opening round.

In Flight A, Dennis dominated Quentin Coulaud of Georgia State to open his senior season then turned around a first-set loss to Trevor Foshey of Mississippi State in the second round to advance 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Two freshmen also drew spots in Flight A singles with Daniel Rodrigues launching his college career with a bang as he scored a late break in his first set of the opening round before rolling to a 7-5, 6-0 win over Miami’s Kaya Gore.

Play continues on Saturday beginning with a round of doubles followed by singles action. Competition at Carolina Tennis Center begins at 9 a.m. with first serve at Columbia Tennis Center coming at 9:30 a.m.

Entry to both venues is free and open to the public with free parking also available at both locations.
