Columbia, S.C. – The Gamecock men’s soccer team notched its second win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Stetson Hatters today at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium. South Carolina improves to 2-0-0, while the Hatters fall to 0-1-0.
South Carolina forward Ayo Akinsete scored his second goal of the season to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead at 21:54. Streaking down the left side of the field, Eric Szeszycki served the ball to Akinsete who reached the back of the net from six yards out. USC would ride the one-goal lead into halftime.
In the 58th minute, Ryan Deter slid past Stetson goalkeeper, Ian Landrum, to score the second goal of the match off an open net. With Deter’s goal, the Gamecocks would take a 2-0 lead over the Hatters.
South Carolina dominated the Hatters throughout the match, outshooting them 13-3. Gamecock goalkeeper, Brad Guzan, recorded his first shutout of the season. Landrum posted seven saves for the Hatters.
“Ayo has done a great job for us, but he is still adjusting, like all our freshmen are,” commented Head Coach Mark Berson. ” Everyone has stepped up and played well and I am very proud of them.”
The Gamecocks head to Charleston this weekend for the Aaron Olitsky Classic where they will take on Richmond and Northwestern. South Carolina will face Richmond on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5:00 p.m. and Northwestern on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
