Lake Elmo, Minn. – Play was officially suspended late Monday afternoon at the 2018 ANNIKA Intercollegiate due to weather with South Carolina women’s golf currently holding ninth place and several Gamecocks with anywhere from three to eight holes remaining to play in the opening round.
“We’re looking forward to getting back out in the morning to finish day one,” South Carolina head coach Kalen Anderson said. “We’ll have a lot of golf to play tomorrow. I thought Anita [Uwadia] stood out and played steady to begin our opening round.”
As a team, the Gamecocks are at +6 with play suspended, led by Anita Uwadia, who is in a tie for 17th place at -2 after 10 holes. The remaining Gamecocks competing in the tournament are: Lois Kaye Go at +1 through 12, Ana Pelaez at +3 through 14, Skylar Thompson at +2 through 14 and Marion Veysseyre at +3 through 15.
In her first collegiate event, Thompson’s score was good enough for second on the team with a pair of birdies on the back nine. South Carolina did a lot of its work on the back nine, where the entire group started their day.
Uwadia was the leader in birdies for the Gamecocks. She carded three, including impressive play on the 482-yard par-5 17th.
With a combined seven birdies, the Gamecocks were looking solid at -3 halfway through their round, but a tough start on the front nine pushed South Carolina back to the middle of the field.
South Carolina and the rest of the field will finish their first round starting tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. ET. The field will then take a short break before returning to the course to complete the second round.
