Gamecock Freshmen Set for FIBA U19 World Cup

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball incoming freshmen Agot Makeer and Ayla McDowell will represent Canada and Brazil, respectively, when the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup tips off in Brno, Czechia, on Sat., July 12. The nine-day event at Starez Arena Vodova features three days of group play ahead of the quarterfinal knock-out rounds beginning on Wed., July 16, and medal rounds closing out play on Sun., July 20.

Makeer is making her second international appearance for Canada, following her All-Star 5 showing at the 2024 FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup, at which she led her team to a silver medal behind her 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

McDowell is in her second international appearance this summer as she was part of Brazil’s silver medal team at the FIBA AmeriCup earlier this month. Prior to that she played for Brazil in the 2024 FIBA U18 AmeriCup where it finished fourth and she averaged 14.8 points and 7.7 rebounds to earn a spot on the All-Star 5.

Canada is in Group B and opens the tournament on Saturday against Portugal at 8:30 a.m. ET followed by a 5:45 a.m. ET tipoff against Nigeria on Sunday and a 5:45 a.m. ET start against China on Tuesday. Brazil’s Group C games begin with France at 5:45 p.m. ET Saturday and continue with an 8 a.m. ET tipoff against Australia on Sunday and a 2:15 p.m. ET start against Mali on Tuesday.
