Gamecocks Drop Road Match to Tigers
CLEMSON, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team (1-1) dropped its match 4-1 Tuesday night (Aug. 26) to No. 6 Clemson (1-0-1).
The Gamecocks had an opportunity in the 5th minute when Tyler Trimnal beat the Clemson backline off a deep goal kick, but he was unable to get his shot past the goalkeeper. The Tigers had a couple of opportunities in the first half, including one that hit off the post.
The Tigers netting a goal in the 32nd minute to take the lead going into halftime. They would add a goal nine minutes into the second half.
South Carolina’s attack responded less than four minutes later to pull within one. Matthew DeJianne slipped a pass through several Clemson defenders to Mika Habel on the right side of the box. Habel took a powerful shot and deflected off a defender’s foot and into the back of the net. It’s the second time this season Habel and DeJianne connected for a Carolina goal.
The Tigers added goals in the 80th and 88th minutes for the final tally.
Filip Versterre finished with five saves on the night.
The Gamecocks open their home schedule Friday at 7 p.m. when they take on USC Upstate.
