The South Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated N.C. State, Saturday morning at the Carolina Natatorium. The South Carolina men’s team defeated N.C. State 124-97 and the women’s team defeated the Wolfpack 124-97.
“I think all our swimmers raced pretty well,” said USC Head Swimming Coach Don Gibb. “We got humiliated two years ago and I think our team used that as motivation this year. We had some great early season times and improved on our previous performances. We still have some fundamental issues, turns and pushoffs but overall I was very pleased with this performance.”
Leading the way on the women’s squad was sophomore Anna Nyiry and freshman Heather Skaggs, who each earned two wins in individual heats. Nyiry was victorious in the 50 free (23.76) and in the 100 fly (55.10). Skaggs continued her good start with victories in the 100 free (51.53) and 200 free (1:52.24). Also winning individual heats for the Gamecocks were: Sarah Doyle (1000 free), Capi Adams (400 IM) and the 200 yard medley relay team (Butler, Adams, Nyiry and Skaggs).
On the men’s side, senor All-American Zsolt Gaspar earned victories in the 50 free (20.24) and 100 fly (48.86). Also earning victories for USC was sophomore Chris McCrary in the 100 free with a time of 46.12, Tamas Szucs in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.20 and Istvan Bathazi earned victories in the 1000 free and 400 IM.
South Carolina also won all four of the diving competitions. Senior All-American Brandon Hulko won both the one-meter (305.40) and three-meter (321.60) on the men’s side. For the women, Holly Hodges earned victories on the one-meter (269.55) and three-meter (289.05) as well.
“I think we had some great individual performances today and I’m very happy with the way our freshmen divers executed and our veterans stepped it up for us,” said USC Head Diving Coach Todd Sherritt. “Next week will be a good test for this group.”
The Gamecocks host SEC East rival Florida next Sat. Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. at the Carolina Natatorium.
