Men’s Golf at 2018 NCAA Bryan Regional

BRYAN, Texas — South Carolina shot 294 (+6) in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Bryan Regional on Tuesday at Traditions Club. The Gamecocks sit in sixth place heading into the final round on Wednesday morning, eight shots off the pace for the five-team NCAA Championship cutline.

Senior Ben Dietrich led Carolina with a 2-under 70 in round two. He made the turn at 2-under thanks to a trio of birdies, and finished with a bogey free even par 36 over his final nine holes. The Bluffton, S.C., native is T-19th at 1-over for the tournament going into the final round.

Freshman Andrew Spiegler had a great start to his day with a bogey free 2-under 34 on the front nine. The Abingdon, Va., native shot 4-over coming in to finish with a 2-over 74. Senior Keenan Huskey and junior Scott Stevens each carded a pair of 75s (+3) to round out the counting scores for the Gamecocks. Huskey was even par through 14 holes before his tee shot went out of bounds, and he made double bogey at the par-5 fifth hole. Stevens started the day 5-over through five holes but was able to bounce back nicely with a 2-under finish. Junior Will Miles shot 78 (+6). He made the turn at 2-over and carded a 4-over 40 coming in.

Top-seeded Texas A&M, the host school and the second ranked team in the nation via Golfstat, remains in the lead after another 9-under 279. The Aggies have a one shot lead over Clemson, who had the round of the tournament so far with a 12-under 276. Baylor and UCLA each shot even par 288s to remain third and fourth respectively. Ole Miss, who came into the day in sixth after a 6-over opening round, moved up to fifth place with a 3-under 285.

Chandler Phillips and Brandon Smith of Texas A&M remained tied for the lead at 8-under after each posting 68s for the second consecutive day. Four players are tied for third at 7-under.

QUOTING COACH Bill McDonald

“It was a frustrating day overall for the team, but Ben Dietrich was clutch and he had a really solid round for us. We are a seven seed for a reason and some of our struggles this spring were evident in today’s play. However, I like the determination of this group. I’m looking for them to come out ready to go tomorrow for the final round.”

ROUND CHANGER Ben Dietrich

Dietrich tallied his seventh round of par or better during the 2017-18 season today. He will be gunning for his first top-20 finish of the season and the seventh of his career in Wednesday’s final round. He made just one bogey all day Wednesday to go alongside three red numbers. Dietrich leads the team with 25 pars so far through two rounds at the NCAA Bryan Regional. He finished T-22nd in his only previous NCAA Regional appearance at Carolina his freshman year in 2014 in Eugene, Ore.
