Seven Wins Open Men’s Tennis Season Friday
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis opened serve on its Fall 2025 season Friday, hosting six teams at the Carolina Classic at Carolina Tennis Center. The six Gamecocks competing posted seven wins across two rounds of singles action to open the tournament with three advancing to the semifinals of their flights.
The Gamecocks opened strong, sweeping all three first-round matches in Flight 1 singles, including the first college victory for freshman Charlie Swaine, who battled past NC State’s Cody Benton 7-6 (5), 6-3. Sophomores Gabe Avram and Max Stenzer posted matching 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the 16-player draw. Stenzer continued his strong day with a 6-3, 6-4 quarterfinal win over Mikalai Bankou of SC State. Swaine put up a tough fight in the quarters, but the flight’s top seed Wissam Abderrahman of UCF took the 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.
In Flight 2, sophomore Atakan Karan wasted no time advancing to the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-2 in over SC State’s Vanja Petrov. There he pushed past Thanaphat Boosarawongse of Columbia 6-2, 6-3 to earn his spot in the semis. After a first-round bye as the top seed in the flight, sophomore Paul Barbier Gazeu was efficient in his 6-4, 6-4 quarterfinal win over North Carolina’s Nicholas Mangiapane.
The tournament continues Saturday with one round of singles and two of doubles, and Sunday will close out the event with one round of each. Action both days starts at 9 a.m. Fans can follow the tournament full draws/results or live video.
