Four Gamecocks Set to Compete at ITA Sectionals
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team heads back to North Carolina this weekend, sending four Gamecocks to the ITA East Sectional Championships hosted at UNC from Nov. 6-9. Information on the event such as schedule and draws can be found here.
Lucas da Silva headlines the Gamecocks as the No. 2 seed in both singles and doubles, teaming up with Paul Barbier Gazeu in doubles play. Barbier Gazeu and Sean Daryabeigi also secured spots in the singles main draw, while Daryabeigi will join Max Stenzer to form the team’s second doubles duo for the weekend. Daryabeigi and Stenzer made an impressive run at ITA Regionals last month, narrowly missing the chance to qualify for NCAAs after advancing to the semifinals.
Barbier Gazeu and Daryabeigi are coming off dominant performances at the Wake Forest Invitational last week where they each claimed a singles title and won the doubles title as a pair.
This tournament is the last opportunity for the Gamecocks to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships in Orlando later this month. Six singles players (semifinalist, two quarterfinal playoff winners) and three doubles teams (champion, finalist, third place) from each sectional location will punch their ticket to NCAAs.
Last season, da Silva qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship at the ITA East Sectional Championship after advancing to the final round where he ultimately fell to Princeton’s Paul Inchauspe. The result marked his highest finish at an ITA Championship in his collegiate career.
