Gamecocks Fall to LSU

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina volleyball team (9-14, 3-10 SEC) fell 3-0 to LSU (12-12, 5-8 SEC) on Friday night in the Carolina Volleyball Center.

1st SET: LSU opened the match with a 2-0 run before a Tiger attack error put the Gamecocks on the board. It became a tight battle early on, with teams trading points. Back-to-back kills by Alayna Johnson and Emily Beeker gave the Gamecocks their first lead at 5-4 but LSU was able to reclaim the lead and hold a slight edge. Victoria Hill’s third kill of the set tied it at 14-14 but a late 3-0 run by LSU gave the Tigers momentum to win the set 25-22.

2nd SET: The beginning of the second set mirrored the first set, with an early back-and-forth battle. Back-to-back kills by Hill gave the Gamecocks a lead at 14-13 which was later pushed to 19-18. A late surge of energy backed by a block by Laiya Ebo and Ava Leahy spoiled LSU’s set point but the Tigers ultimately claimed the set 25-23.

3rd SET:  South Carolina and LSU traded small points early in the third set, with service errors from both sides of the net providing easy breaks. A 4–0 Gamecock run, gifted by three LSU attack errors and a strong kill from Elise Marchal gave South Carolina a 9–6 edge. LSU responded quickly, tying the score at 9–9 and prompting a USC timeout. A kill from Leahy put the Garnet & Black up 12–11, but a service error swung momentum back and LSU eventually took a 14–12 lead. Back to back kills from Hill tied the set again at 14–14 before LSU rattled off three unanswered points to force another South Carolina timeout. Despite an LSU service error that brought the Gamecocks within reach, the Tigers closed out the set 25–20 to complete the sweep.
