Gamecocks Complete Day Three of ITA Sectionals
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team wrapped up the third day of the ITA East Sectional Championship on Saturday afternoon, picking up two victories.
In the main draw, Paul Barbier Gazeu battled through a tight quarterfinal match against Harvard’s Melchoir Delloye. After taking the first set 6-4, Barbier Gazeu was edged in the final two, 6-4, 6-1, closing out an impressive run through the tournament. He faces the No. 8 seed from Clemson tomorrow in the playoffs for a chance to earn a spot at the NCAA singles tournament.
In consolation singles, Lucas da Silva continued his solid form, earning a straight-sets win over Cornell’s Rodrigo Fernandes 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. Sean Daryabeigi fought for three sets, claiming the opening frame against Harvard’s Nathan Blokhin before narrowly falling 3-6, 7-6(1), [10-7].
On the main draw doubles courts, Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer came up just short in a semifinal thriller, falling to the No. 1 seeded duo – UPenn’s Aaron Sandler and Manfredi Graziani 6-4, 7-6(5), [12-10]. They will face a duo from UNC tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for one final chance to qualify for the NCAA doubles tournament.
da Silva and Barbier Gazeu continued their strong run in the consolation draw, rolling past Virginia Tech’s Victor Kimpell and Drew Fishback 6-2, 6-1 to take consolation doubles title.
