PALM CITY, Fla. — South Carolina was unable to move up the leaderboard in the second round Monday at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, shooting an 8-over 292. The Gamecocks sit in 14th place heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Senior Keenan Huskey led the way with a 1-under 70. The 2017 All-American is T-19th and was bogey free for his first 15 holes on Monday. He finished strong after consecutive bogeys on holes eight and nine with a birdie on his final hole of the day, the par-4 10th. Huskey shot 34 (-2) on the back nine and 36 (+1) on the front.

Freshman Andrew Spiegler had a solid round as his score counted in the lineup for the second consecutive day. The Abingdon, Va., native, carded a 1-over 72 after beginning his round with a 37 on the back nine and finishing with an even par 35 down the stretch.

Senior Ben Dietrich shot 74 (+3) and junior Scott Stevens logged another 76 (+5) leading the team with five birdies. Senior Will Miles was unable to get it going, shooting 81 (+10) on Monday after carding an even par first round on Sunday.

No. 1 Oklahoma State separated itself from the rest of the field opening up a 12-shot lead after shooting 274 (-10) in the second round. The Cowboys are 17-under for the tournament. No. 9 Baylor is in second with a total of 563 (-5). Only five of the 16 teams in the field are under par. Viktor Hovland of Oklahoma State has a two-shot lead over Matthew Perrine of Baylor. Hovland shot 65 today and is 10-under overall through two rounds.

“We struggled again today, but I really liked what I saw out of freshman Andrew Spiegler. We’re still losing shots on some easy holes and overall, we just haven’t been that sharp the last couple of events. I still think this team is capable of playing much better and tomorrow’s final round is a great opportunity to start turning things around.”

ROUND CHANGER Keenan Huskey

Huskey carded his 14th round of par or better during the 2017-18 season Tuesday, tying him with Scott Stevens for the team lead. The Greenville, S.C., native, has shot par or better 56 times in his career en route to the best scoring average in program history (71.55). The 2017 All-American will be gunning for his sixth top-20 finish of the season tomorrow and the 22nd of his career.

Scott Stevens is one of just 10 players in the 90-man field with double-digit birdies. He’s T-4th with 10 red numbers through two rounds.
