Gamecocks Open Dual Match Season 2-0
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 18 South Carolina men’s tennis team (2-0) opened the dual match season with wins over North Florida and The Citadel, defeating the Ospreys 6-1 and sweeping the Bulldogs 7-0. The Garnet & Black picked up the doubles point to start both matches and three Gamecocks secured two singles victories on the day.
North Florida
Sean Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer opened their match winning three straight games, before ultimately striking first with a 6-2 showing on court one. Atakan Karahan and Cole Henceroth battled back and forth with the Ospreys, and were tied at 3-3 before winning three consecutive games to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 win from the third position.
Daryabeigi dominated Andreas Scott 6-1, 6-3 on court one to give the Gamecocks a 2-0 lead. Charlie Swaine defeated Youssef Labbene 6-2, 6-1 in his collegiate dual match debut. Sophomore Paul Barbier Gazeu earned a 6-4, 6-3 win from court two in his first career appearance. Max Stenzer grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win from the third position against Breno Marques. Karahan defeated Enrique Pena 6-4, 6-1 to make the score 6-0. Gabe Avram dropped the first set 4-6 on court five, but battled back to win the second 6-3 and force a tie break. Joao Portugal won the tie break 10-6 to earn the Ospreys lone point.
The Citadel
The Gamecocks opened up doubles play with all three courts jumping out to early 2-1 leads before simultaneously pushing ahead to 3-1 across the board. At No. 2, Stenzer and Daryabeigi set the tone with their second win of the day as a pair in a 6-2 victory over Noah Van Dyke and Reece Beckendorf. The point was clinched moments later when Karahan and Swaine cruised past Tucker Hendrix and Will Hart, 6-1, on court three. Gazeu and da Silva were leading Brady Gober and Ted Bagwell, 4-2, on court one when doubles play concluded.
The Gamecocks carried their momentum into singles, dominantly sweeping all six matches in straight sets to secure the overall win. Karahan opened singles action with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 win over Reece Beckendorf on court three, followed by Gazeu’s 6-0, 6-1 victory against Brady Gober on court two. Andrade da Silva added a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Noah Van Dyke on court one, while Avram defeated Ted Bagwell, 6-0, 6-3, on court five. Swaine earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Graham Hardin on court six, and Henceroth capped the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Christian Holloway on court four.
