Edwards Named SEC and USBWA Player of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore Joyce Edwards picked up conference and national recognition today for her efforts in a pair of wins last week, during which she became the fifth-fastest Gamecock to reach 1,000 career points and the first to score 20 or more points in four straight SEC games. Edwards was named the SEC co-Player of the Week by the league office and was among the USBWA’s National Players of the Week. This is the second time she has claimed both awards this season and the third time she has earned SEC Player of the Week recognition.

Edwards shot 71.4 percent from the field and 73.3 percent from the free throw line en route to her 20.5 points per game, and she added 4.5 assists per game as well. Against Mississippi State she scored nine of the team’s first 15 points to help build a 10-point lead after the first quarter. She finished the night with a career-high tying six assists and 21 points, which included her 1,000th career point in just her 64th career game. Against No. 19/17 Tennessee, Edwards’ 20 points included four straight late in the first quarter to help turn a tie game into a seven-point Gamecock lead at the end of the period. Her scoring was steady throughout the game to finish with 20 points to go along with four assists and eight rebounds.

Edwards’ effort in the wins helped propel the Gamecocks into sole possession of first place in the SEC regular-season standings. The team’s 43-point win over No. 19/17 Tennessee marked the largest margin of victory against a ranked opponent in Gamecock history, and it was the Lady Vols’ largest margin of defeat in program history.

For the season, Edwards is 15th in the nation with 20.3 points per game and ninth in field goal percentage at .606. She also ranks ninth in the SEC in blocks per game (1.2) and comes in 12th in steals per game (1.9). She has scored at least 20 points 15 times and been in double figures in every outing this season. In SEC games, her 18.5 points per game rank sixth and her 6.6 rebounds per game come in 15th in the league.

The other USBWA selections were Jaloni Cambridge (Ohio State), Timaya Lewis-Eutsey (Marshall), Gisella Maul (Cal) and Kiki Rice (UCLA).

No. 3/3 South Carolina is on the road this weekend, heading to No. 6/5 LSU for an 8:30 p.m. ET tipoff on ABC.
