Harris Goes Low to Win Puerto Rico Classic

South Carolina Athletics

Boca Raton, Fla. native now tied with three-time All-American Kyle Thompson (1997-2001) for most career victories in program history with five

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Redshirt senior All-American Frankie Harris notched his second win of the season on Wednesday at the Puerto Rico Classic to open the spring slate for South Carolina. The Boca Raton, Fla. native shot 67-67-66 for a new 54-hole, career-low score of 200 (-16) to pace the Gamecocks and the field.

Harris made 16 birdies over the course of three rounds, finishing T-1st in par-5 scoring average (4.17, -10) and T-3rd in par -4 scoring average (3.80, -6). It’s the fifth career victory now for the three-year starter which puts him tied with three-time All-American Kyle Thompson (1997-01) for the most individual wins in program history.

As a team, Carolina finished fifth this week with a 54-hole total of 833 (-31) with sub-280, red number team scores each day at Grand Reserve Golf Club. Three of the team’s 20-lowest 54-hole scores in program history have now come at the Puerto Rico Classic the last five seasons.

Freshman Talan Harrison also had a solid week as he shot 207 (-9) thanks to rounds of 68-69-70 to finish T-14th, his second career top-20 finish in Garnet and Black. He also made 16 birdies this week and T-2nd in the field in par-3 scoring average (2.75, -3). The Kannapolis, N.C. native has played in five tournaments so far this season with three consecutive starts in the lineup dating back to the Fallen Oak Collegiate (Oct. 18-20).

Senior Zach Adams finished T-55th at 1-under with sophomore Marek Fleming and junior Brock Blais each finishing T-66th at 2-over to round out the Gamecocks’ five-man lineup. Adams, Harris and Fleming all tallied two eagles this week at Grand Reserve to tie for the field lead with five other players. The Gamecocks’ six eagles led the 15-team field and the team’s 59 birdies were seventh. Carolina was third in par-3 scoring average (2.93, -4) and T-4th in par-5 scoring average (4.53, -28).

No. 1 Virginia went wire-to-wire running away with the team title, shooting the second-lowest team score in the 33-year history of the tournament at 809 (-55).
