Gamecocks Defeat No. 16 Florida 5-2 on the Road
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 22 South Carolina men’s tennis team (10-2, 3-1 SEC) defeated No. 16 Florida in Gainesville for the first time since 1998 in a 5-2 showing, earning its 10th win of the season. The Gamecocks dominated from the start, claiming the doubles point before keeping the momentum rolling throughout singles where they picked up victories from the first four positions, three of which were in straight sets.
South Carolina secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. The No. 28 pair of Lucas da Silva and Paul Barbier Gazeu set the tone with a dominant 6-2 victory from the top of the lineup to mark their eighth straight win of dual match season and remain undefeated. Atakan Karahan and Charlie Swaine followed suit with a 6-4 win on court three after trialing for the first half of the match to clinch the point.
The Gamecocks carried that momentum into singles, winning four of six matches across the lineup. The Gators struck first with a win over Gabe Avram on court five to level the score at 1-1 but South Carolina quickly retaliated with a straight set win from Barbier Gazeu to reclaim the lead at 2-1. Senior da Silva quickly followed with a win over No. 29 Henry Jefferson, marking his fifth straight ranked singles win of the season. Karahan battled through a first-set tiebreak before closing in straight sets on court four in an upset win over No. 46 Jeremy Jin to officially clinch the match at 4-2. Daryabeigi delivered a strong comeback on court two, dropping the opening set before taking the final two to secure the 5-2 victory for the Gamecocks.
The Gamecocks continue SEC play in Columbia, hosting Texas A&M on Sunday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m.
