Gamecocks Continue in Birmingham ITF Futures

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – South Carolina senior Gabriel Friedrich won an outstanding match over the seventh seed of the Birmingham ITF Futures on Wednesday. The senior Gamecock earned his first win in the main draw over Juan Manuel Benitez Chavarriga, ranked 615 in the ATP. Friedrich and freshman Francisco Cerundolo, a freshman, both moved into the second round of the main draw.
Friedrich showed his stamina in a three-set win over Benitez Chavarriga, winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. The Brazilian will compete in the round of 16 against Wil Spencer, who’s currently ranked 698 in the ATP.
Cerundolo earned his first win of the main draw over Guanarteme Nuez Delgao from Spain. The Gamecock represented his home country of Argentina in his 6-2, 6-2 win over Nuez Delgado. Cerundolo will face Roberto Cid Subervi in the round of 16.
The Gamecock freshman is also competing in the doubles bracket of the competition alongside Argentinian teammate Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna. The duo won it first match of the competition against Hunter Johnson and Yates Johnson 6-3, 7-6(2).
