Men's Tennis Competes in Individual Competitions

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis individuals competed at three separate competitions on Friday. Four Gamecocks earned wins in singles competitions and South Carolina doubles pairings took two wins at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Two individuals wrapped up play at the Birmingham ITF Futures while Paul Jubb began qualifiers at the Niceville ITF Futures.
In the Georgia Tech Invitational singles competition, all four Gamecocks won in the first round. Thomas Mayronne defeated Georgia State’s Jack MacFarlane 6-2, 7-6 (0-3), Wood Benton took down Auburn’s Michael Durham 6-1, 6-3 and Thomas Brown overcame Georgia State’s 6-1, 6-1. Yancy Dennis also moved onto the next round after topping Auburn’s Eddy Nguyen by default.
Each of South Carolina’s doubles pairings played two matches on Friday. Dennis and Brown defeated Virginia’s Matthew Lord and Jerome Romauldez 8-5 but fell in a tie breaker to Georgia State’s Andrei Ardrukhou and Quentin Couland 8-7 (0-1). Benton and Mayronne overcame an Auburn pairing (Eddy Nguyen and Olle Thestrup) by default before coming up short against Sebastian Acuna and Jack MacFarlane from Georgia State, 8-6.
Gabriel Friedrich and Francisco Cerundolo finished competition at the Birmingham ITF Futures. Friedrich played his last match in the singles quarterfinals, falling to three-seed Fabrizio Ornago 6-3, 6-4. Cerundolo played in the doubles semifinals alongside fellow Argentinan Santiago Fa Rodriguez Taverna. The duo fell to the one-seed pairing, Nick Chappell and Boris Arias, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (2), 10-8.
At the Niceville ITF Futures, Jubb secured his first win of the qualifying draw with a win over Jake Douglas. Jubb represented his home country of Great Britan and went 7-6 (2), 7-5 over Douglas to advance to the second round.
