South Carolina Starts Strong at ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis delivered 10 wins in the first two rounds of the ITA Carolina Regional today. The Gamecocks are one of 22 colleges in North and South Carolina to take part in the competition, which began Friday and continues through Tuesday.
The Gamecocks started the competition strong with a 5-1 record in the first round. Yancy Dennis and Paul Jubb took the first two victories of the day with Dennis topping College of Charleston’s Alex Angradi 6-1, 6-0 and Jubb defeating Marshall Dagostine of Clemson 6-2, 6-1. Wood Benton was the third Gamecock to secure a spot in the second round with a 6-1, 6-2 win over NC Central’s Pablo Juez-Torres.
No. 84 Thomas Mayronne defeated his first-round opponent, Cameron Green from Furman, 6-3, 6-3. No. 28 Gabriel Friedrich finished up the first round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wake Forest’s Pat Hannity.
In the second round of singles, the Gamecocks powered through with four more wins. Jubb secured his second two-set win of the tournament, finishing 6-3, 6-2 over Campbell’s Lorenz Schwab. Dennis fought off a late challenge by Ignasi De Rueda from UNCW to win 6-2, 7-5. Mayronne secured a spot in the third round with a win over Gerard Sola (Campbell), 6-2, 6-1. Friedrich closed out second-round action a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Benedikt Henning from College of Charleston.
The tournament resumes on Saturday as doubles play joins the singles action. In the singles main draw, Jubb will face Spencer Furman from Duke at 10 a.m., Dennis will play Nick Stachowiak from Duke at 10:30 am., Mayronne will play Catalin Mateas from Duke at 11 a.m. and Friedrich will play Sean Sculley from Duke at noon. In consolation singles, Brown will take on Campbell’s Lukas Schaefer at 8 a.m.
In the doubles competition, Benton and Dennis will play Jake Bhangdia and Drew Singerman of Furman at 1:30 p.m., Friedrich and Mayronne will play Daniel Hammerstadt and Oliver Palmer from UNCG at 2 p.m., and Brown and Jubb will play Dagostine and Carlos Kelaidis of Clemson at 1 p.m.
