Gamecocks Square Off With Coastal Carolina Saturday

Sept. 29, 2017

Men’s Soccer vs. Coastal Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina (4-4-1, 0-2-1 C-USA) welcomes instate foe Coastal Carolina (3-5-0, 0-1-0 Sun Belt) to the friendly confines of Stone Stadium on Saturday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the Chanticleers, with gates opening 1 hour prior to the start of the match.

The team has supported Ovarian Cancer Awareness all month long in September both at home and on the road by wearing teal warmup shirts for their matches. In addition to the shirts, the Gamecock coaching staff and support staff have been wearing teal polo shirts on the sidelines at every game.

The team’s hope is to promote awareness for this cancer and encourage women to get regular check ups. Contact your local ovarian cancer support group for more information at 888-682-7426 or visit the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s website by clicking here. Remember, NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE!

The teal warmup shirts worn by the team are on sale at the Russell House Bookstore, the game day store and online by clicking here.

FROM THE COACH

“We know there’s no breathing room in our schedule. The guys have prepared for that. We’ve been preparing them all season for it. In Division I, there’s no light game – there’s no easy game. It’s regroup and look at the deficiencies out of the Wake Forest game – mentally and physically prepare.” — assistant coach Tyler Kettering

SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA

The Chanticleers return 17 letterwinners and eight starters from a team that went 10-7-3 a season ago. Coastal has made seven-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and was picked to win the Sun Belt Conference title prior to the start of the 2017 season. The Chanticleers come into Saturday night’s match 3-5-0 with wins over UNC-Greensboro, No. 15 Charlotte and College of Charleston. Frantzdy Pierrot leads the team in points (6), goals (3), shots (19) and shots on goal (16). Eight different players have accounted for the team’s 10 scores. Miguel Gutierrez leads the team with two assists. Martin Melchor is the only other player on the Chants roster with double-digit shot attempts (15). Senior Braulio Linares-Ortiz has started six of the team’s eight matches, posting a 2-4-0 record in goal. He’s logged 28 saves (.718 save percentage), allowed 11 goals (1.48 GAA) and posted one shutout so far in 2017.

UP NEXT

The Gamecocks remain at home as they welcome in Virginia Tech (5-4-0, 1-2-0 ACC) for a nonconference matchup next Tuesday. The Hokies, who were ranked 17th in the preseason coaches poll, recently upset No. 1 Notre Dame on Friday, September 22, by a score of 2-1 in Blacksburg.
