AWENDAW, S.C. — South Carolina is the 36-hole co-leader of the 2017 Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate after shooting 286 (-2) in the second round on Monday. Sophomore Scott Stevens (70) and Ryan Stachler (71) paced the Gamecocks with subpar rounds.

Stevens tallied four birdies and shot two 35s to move up almost 30 spots on the leaderboard. Stachler also had four birdies as he recorded his fifth round of par or better in the 2016-17 season with his 1-under 71. Stevens and Stachler are T-22nd heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Defending individual champion Keenan Huskey is T-3rd at 5-under after tallying a 1-over 73 in the second round. Huskey, who shot 66 in round one, recorded the first eagle of the tournament for the South Carolina on the par 5 fourth today. He’s had eight birdies in the first two rounds combined to go along with his eagle on Monday. Huskey is four shots off the lead heading into the final round. Braden Thornberry and Ben Wolcott, each of Ole Miss, are tied for the 36-hole lead at 9-under.

Freshman Jamie Wilson continued his steady play, shooting an even par 72. Spanning over the last two tournaments, Wilson has played three of his last four rounds of par or better. Wilson is T-7th at 3-under. He leads the team with nine birdies and is T-2nd in the field in par 3 scoring average at 2.90 (-1).

After a 71 (-1) in the opening round, junior Ben Dietrich sits at 5-over after carding a 78 (+6) in the second round. Sophomore Will Miles, who is playing as an individual this week for the Gamecocks, shot even par on Monday and is T-17th at 1-under. Miles was steady all day, recording just one bogey in his 18 holes.

Fellow SEC program No. 25 Ole Miss is tied at the top of the leaderboard with Carolina heading into the final round. N.C. State and Georgia State are within five shots of the lead. The Gamecocks will look to defend their title for the third-straight year in tomorrow’s final round.

Quoting Coach Bill McDonald

“We played well today for the most part. Unfortunately we lost a few shots coming down the stretch in some very tough and windy conditions. The tequila sunrise pin position on the inward nine wreaked havoc on most everyone in the field, and I’m proud of how our guys battled. We are in good position going into the final round, and it should be a great experience for our team.”

Round Changer Scott Stevens

Stevens’ 2-under round was his 14th round of par or better in the 2016-17 season, tying Huskey for the most on the team.

Notable

  • South Carolina’s par-3 scoring average (3.16) and par-4 scoring average (4.01) are T-2nd in the 14-team field.
  • Carolina’s 37 birdies are third in the field.
  • The Gamecocks have shot 12-under on par 5s this week and rank third in the field in par 5 scoring average at 4.76.
