COLUMBIA, S.C. — No. 1 seed South Carolina women’s soccer will host second-seeded North Carolina in the Elite Eight on Fri., Nov. 25, at Stone Stadium. The match, which kicks off at 6 p.m. ET, features a top-10 battle between the third-ranked Gamecocks (21-1-1) and sixth-ranked Tar Heels (16-3-4).
South Carolina topped fourth-seeded and No. 4 ranked BYU 1-0 Saturday night behind a penalty kick from senior captain Chelsea Drennan in the 69th minute to reach the Elite Eight for the second time in the last three years. The Gamecocks have yet to concede a goal in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, outscoring opponents 9-0 throughout the first three rounds.
North Carolina moved past third-seeded Clemson 1-0 Sunday afternoon to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second time in the last four years. The Tar Heels opened the NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 win over Liberty before downing Kansas 2-0 in the second round.
Friday will mark the fourth all-time meeting between the Gamecocks and Tar Heels and the second time the two have met in the NCAA Tournament. South Carolina, which is 2-1 against the Tar Heels, defeated North Carolina 1-0 in the Sweet 16 in 2014 to reach the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.
