Coates Named SEC Co-Player of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. ââ’¬” South Carolina senior forward Alaina Coates was named SEC co-Player of the Week, the league announced today. In back-to-back wins this week, Coates posted double-doubles in each, with 28 points and 16 rebounds against Hampton and 12 points and 14 rebounds against Maine.

With a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter against Hampton, the Gamecocks opened the second with a 30-6 surge that included 10 straight points from Coates. Against Maine, Coates had posted her double-double by halftime, hitting 10 points and 12 rebounds in just 15 minutes of play. Her double-double against Maine was her sixth straight, dating back to last season’s NCAA Tournament.

On the season, Coates has been the team’s top rebounder in every game and leads the nation in rebounding average at 14.3. With 973 career rebounds, she is on pace to become just the third Gamecock in program history to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.

The Gamecocks continue with the stretch of home games on Tue., Nov. 22 against Saint Peter’s. South Carolina travels to Springfield, Mass., on Sun., Nov. 27, for a 1 p.m. game against No. 4/6 Louisville on ESPN2 before getting back on the road to Austin to take on No. 14/10 Texas on Dec. 1.
