Dennis Tops Fellow Gamecock Mayronne for Singles Crown at Georgia Tech Invite

Oct. 9, 2016

ATLANTA ââ’¬” Three Gamecocks wrapped up play at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Sunday. Yancy Dennis topped teammate Thomas Mayronne to capture the DII singles championship, his first career collegiate title.

“We had a great end to the tournament today,” said assistant coach Pablo Bellagamba. “Doubles was top notch and [Andrew] Schafer played his most complete singles match of the tournament. Thomas and Yancy competed their hearts out in a very tricky dynamic in their match against each other today. We are very happy with the way we finished strong.”

After Dennis and Mayronne posted two wins apiece on Saturday, it set up a Sunday showdown between the two Gamecocks, where Dennis was able to come away with a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Despite the loss, Mayronne has been very strong for Carolina this fall. He finished the weekend 3-1 and is now 6-2 overall this fall. Following a tough first two days in singles, Schafer was strong on the final day of the tournament, defeating Georgia’s Robert Loeb 6-2, 6-4. In doubles, Mayronne and Schafer downed Florida State’s duo of Rana Bhullar and Alex Knaff, 8-3.

The Gamecocks will be back in action this coming weekend at the ITA Carolina Regionals in Cary, N.C.
