Both teams take on challenging 2016 slates that include home matches against some of the best of NCAA Division I soccer. The Gamecock men host the top-two seeds from last season’s NCAA Tournament, No. 1 Wake Forest (Oct. 18) and No. 2 Clemson (Aug. 26), while the women welcome 2015 SEC Tournament champs Florida (Oct. 16) to Columbia as well as Ole Miss (Oct. 27), one of six SEC schools to qualify for the NCAA Tournament last year.
Women’s soccer will also host Clemson (Sept. 2) early in the season, facing the Tigers one week after the men open their season against the in-state rival to kick off the 2016-17 Certified SC Palmetto Series. In total, four women’s teams and three men’s squads that qualified for NCAA postseason play in 2015 will face the Gamecocks at Stone Stadium this fall.
South Carolina boasts one of the best atmospheres in college soccer, as both programs have ranked in the top 10 in average attendance the last two seasons. The men’s soccer program sported the fifth-best average attendance mark in 2014, while the women’s team has finished third nationally in each of the previous two years.
The Gamecock men made their 21st NCAA Tournament appearance in 2015 and finished the season unbeaten (8-0-2) at home for the second time in the 37-year history. The women reached the NCAA postseason for the eighth time in the last nine years, tallying double-digit wins for the third-straight season.
