Former Gamecock Sabrina D'Angelo, Canada Earn Bronze In Rio

SAO PAULO, Brazil – Former South Carolina goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo (2011-14) and Canada earned the bronze medal at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament following the Canadians’ 2-1 win over Brazil on Friday at Corinthians Arena. The victory secured the second consecutive bronze medal for the Canada.
Goals by Deanne Rose and Christine Sinclair gave the Canadians a 2-0 lead early in the second half, and they held on after Brazil tallied its only score of the match in the 80th minute.
After winning all three of its matches in group play, Canada advanced to last week’s quarterfinals, where they took down France, 1-0. A 2-0 loss to Germany on Tuesday in the semifinals landed the Canadians in the bronze medal match against the host Brazilians.
D’Angelo, a native of Welland, Ontario, made her Olympic debut in Canada’s second Group-F match against Zimbabwe (Aug. 6). She played all 90 minutes and earned the win, helping the Canadians pickup a 3-1 victory.
A two-time NSCAA First-Team All-American, D’Angelo played in 83 games for South Carolina. She ranks second in program history in shutouts (29) and goals against average (0.76), and her 81 starts are the most for a Gamecock goalkeeper. D’Angelo was drafted 21st by the NWSL’s Western New York Flash in 2015 after leading the Gamecocks to the NCAA Tournament in three of her four seasons at South Carolina.
