VALDIVIA, Chile — South Carolina freshman Tyasha Harris turned on the scoring in the second game of preliminary round action in the FIBA U18 Americas Championship as the United States topped Brazil 80-59. Nine of the Americans’ 11 first-quarter field goals came from close range as they built a 25-16 lead in the opening 10:00 and steadily added to it in each subsequent period. The Gamecocks’ incoming guard was one of four players in double figures for the U.S.
Harris’ night got going with a drive to the rim for her first basket in the second quarter, helping her team to a 42-30 halftime advantage. She added a 3-pointer and another mid-range jumper in the third quarter as the Americans added five points to their advantage heading into the final quarter.
