COLUMBIA, S.C. – Former South Carolina goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo (2011-14) will represent Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics after being named to its 18-player roster by Canadian women’s soccer coach John Herdman on Monday.
D’Angelo is one of two goalkeepers for the Canadians, who open play in the group stage of the Rio Women’s Olympic Soccer Tournament against Australia on Aug. 3 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Canada rounds out Group F action with matches against Zimbabwe (Aug. 6) and Germany (Aug. 9) before the quarterfinals get underway on Aug. 12.
The top-two teams from each group and the two-best third-place teams will qualify for the first knockout round. The semifinals are slated for Aug. 16, while the third-place game and finals will take place on Aug. 19. This year marks Canada’s third-straight appearance in the Olympics.
D’Angelo made her debut for Canada’s National Team earlier this year at the Algarve Women’s Cup (March 2-9) in Portugal. She saw time in two matches, earning a clean sheet in the group stage against Belgium before coming off the bench to help the Canadians secure a 2-1 victory over Brazil to win the tournament. The Welland, Ontario, native also made appearances for Canada’s U-20 and U-17 teams.
A two-time NSCAA First-Team All-American, D’Angelo played in 83 games for South Carolina. She ranks second in program history in shutouts (29) and goals against average (0.76), and her 81 starts are the most for a Gamecock goalkeeper. D’Angelo was drafted 21st overall by the NWSL’s Western New York Flash in 2015 after leading the Gamecocks to the NCAA Tournament in three of her four seasons at South Carolina.
