OTTAWA, ONTARIO ââ’¬” Former South Carolina standout goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo has been named to the 23-player roster for the Canada Women’s National Team, as announced by head coach John Herdman.

D’Angelo, winner of South Carolina’s 2014 President’s Award, is competing for a spot on the 2016 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying team during the squad’s final training camp that began on Saturday (Jan. 9). The official 20-player roster will be released in the final week of January.

“I continue to be very proud of Sabrina and all of her success,” South Carolina women’s soccer coach Shelley Smith said. “Her skills and athleticism combined with her determination make her a special player and a true professional. I am excited to see her get closer to reaching her goal of representing Canada at the highest level.”

Canada opens Olympic qualifying in Group B against Guyana on Feb. 11 before facing Trinidad and Tobago on Feb. 14. The Canadians round out group play against Guatemala (Feb. 16), and all three matches are set to take place at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas.

The tournament features eight countries divided into two groups of four. The top two finishers in each group will advance to the semifinals (Feb. 19), and the winners of the semifinals will earn a spot in the Olympic Games and play in the championship match on Feb. 21.

D’Angelo (2011-14) ranks second in program history in shutouts (29) and goals against average (0.76), and she stands as the only Gamecock to earn two First-Team All-America honors. The Welland, Ontario, native was drafted No. 21 overall by the New York Flash in the 2015 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), and she started seven matches in her debut season before being sidelined due to a shoulder injury.
