LAHAINA, MAUI, Hawaii — Men’s golfer Keenan Huskey continued to pace the Gamecocks at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic, as the sophomore carded a 2-under (69) in Saturday’s second round at the Ka’anapali Golf Course. South Carolina posted an 8-over (292) in round two and currently sits in fifth place (+8, 576) for the tournament.

Huskey (T-6, -3), who has finished under par in each of his last five rounds of competition for the Gamecocks, once again turned in a strong finish to his day. After making the turn at 1-over (38), the Greenville, S.C., native tallied four birdies over his next seven holes before registering pars on his last two holes.

Will Starke followed up his opening-round 1-over (72) with an even (71) on Saturday. He opened with back-to-back bogeys, but the South Carolina senior notched birdies on holes No. 6 and 16 before tallying his final birdie on the par-5 first. Starke sits in a tie for 17th place with a score of 1-over for the tournament.

Freshman Scott Stevens fired a 3-over (75) in his second round and will enter the final day in a tie for 29th place (+3). He made the turn at 1-under following his lone birdie of the day on the par-5 sixth before recording five bogeys on his back nine.

Senior Matt NeSmith and freshman Will Miles both struggled in their second rounds after opening with a pair of 1-over (72s) on Friday. NeSmith (T-48, +7) carded his lone birdie on the par-3 17th, while Miles (T-70, +10) registered two birdies to go along with six bogeys.

Oklahoma (-11, 557) remains atop the leaderboard following a 3-under (281) on Saturday. Georgia turned in the low round (-6, 278) of the day and sits in second at 5-under (563) for the tournament, while North Carolina State (-3, 565) rounds out the top three. Zach Healy of the Bulldogs took over the individual lead (-8, 134) following his 5-under (66) performance in the second round.

Quoting Coach Bill McDonald

” We had a couple of good rounds in some pretty windy and tough conditions. We need a solid round tomorrow to move up the leaderboard. We are really close to playing some great golf as a team and these guys just need a few breaks to go their way.”

Round Changer

Keenan Huskey again relied on a strong back nine to help keep the Gamecocks near the top of the leaderboard. The sophomore notched birdies on three of his first four holes out of the turn.

Notable

The Gamecocks continued to pile up pars in the second round of the tournament. Their 115 pars through two rounds rank second in the field.
Huskey’s 10 birdies this week are good for the second-high total among individuals. Eight of his 10 birdies have come after the turn.
Huskey has now shot under par in six of his last seven rounds of competition for South Carolina.
NeSmith added 12 more pars on Saturday and his 27 pars through two rounds rank second for the week.
Oklahoma and Georgia were the only schools to post rounds under par on Saturday among the field of 19 teams.
