CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A furious comeback attempt from South Carolina (11-7-1) never struck the net, as Marshall (8-8-2) gained a 1-0 win in the semifinals of the 2015 Conference USA Tournament at Transamerica Field on Friday night.
Marshall scored in the 68th minute when Rimario Gordon got the ball on a breakaway and punched it from the top of the 18 into the net on the right side. The Gamecocks tried to answer, firing 15 shots in the final 21 minutes, but Marshall’s Dominik Reining was up to the task, making six saves on the night.
South Carolina nearly took the lead two minutes after halftime. Junior Kurtis Turner headed the corner kick from junior Danny Deakin on frame, but it hit off the crossbar and bounced away.
The Gamecocks controlled much of the first half, taking five shots while holding Marshall to only one. South Carolina also had three corner kicks, while the Herd had none.

Gordon’s goal broke the scoreless tie after both teams opened up the offense a little more to start the second half.

Quotable:
Head coach Mark Berson
I am really proud of our guys. They have worked very hard and have put together a fine season. Obviously this loss is hard to take. We made it to the finals last year, and the guys were focused and determined to push forward from that this year. One thing I know about this group is that they are winners, and we will all take lessons from this and move forward.
