COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina cross country team wrapped up the 2015 home season Wednesday evening with the running of the USC Open. The two-mile race was held at Weston Lake Recreation Area, and was claimed by the Gamecocks.
Freshman Allison Mueller was the team’s top finisher, winning her first career event with a strong time of 12:02.67. In all, Carolina put six of its seven total runners in the top eight overall and won the team event handily over The Citadel. Sophomore Anna McElrath (12:25.84) and senior Allie Whitley (12:52.38) rounded out the race’s top three.
The race offered the first action of the season for a trio of student-athletes, Sequoia Brown, Maya Evans and Helena Harding. It would be Harding that had the best finish of the three, taking fifth (13:29.48) with Brown eighth (13:38.65) and Evans 18th (14:41.91).
Up Next:
The team will split up for its next weekend of competition, taking this coming weekend off before a pair of meets during the first weekend of October. The team will send its starters to the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. on Oct. 2, while other selected members of the team will run at the South Carolina State Invite on Oct. 3.
