COLUMBIA, S.C. – Freshman guard Jamall Gregory sat down with GamecocksOnline.com this week for our web series, “Starting Five With Jamall Gregory.” The series will highlight a different member of the Gamecock men’s basketball team with each edition. Check out what Jamall has to say about his hometown below and what he is working on in the gym this summer.

Q: Community service is really important to you and your family. How have you been involved?
A: There is a local recreation center around my neighborhood [in Washington, D.C.] and I go there and coach some of the kids because a lot of them look up to me because they see that I’m doing well in basketball and I’m one of the few that have been able to go to college. I go there and interact with the kids, and I help feed the homeless with my church.

Q: Talk about your experience going from high school basketball in Washington, D.C., to Elev8 Institute in Florida for a post-graduate year.
A: Going to Elev8 was a good experience; it got me ready for college, actually, because I was away from home for a while. I was able to become more responsible and it got me ready for the next level.

Q: How would you describe your game?
A: I think I’m a team player and I’ll do whatever it takes to win. I’m really not about scoring but if that’s what my team needs I’ll do it. I’m a big defender. I like to defend and get on fast-breaks and make something happen.

Q: What are you working on this summer in workouts?
A: My jump shot; trying to get a little more consistent so when I’m open I can knock down shots.

Q: You’re born and raised in Washington, D.C., what would you say is your favorite national landmark to visit?
A: The Washington Monument. It’s so high. I’ve been to the top once; there is a big elevator that takes you all the way to the top and it’s really cool.
