COLUMBIA, S.C. – Members of the South Carolina men’s basketball team spent Monday afternoon at the Richland County Sheriff Department’s Character Camp, which was held at Blythewood High School. The community outreach initiative is part of the “8K in 8 Days” campaign for Gamecock men’s basketball.
Several players, including guards Marcus Stroman and TeMarcus Blanton, took time teaching youth members the fundamentals of basketball. The group of kids had the opportunity to do layup and free throw drills with each of the Gamecocks in stations set up throughout the gym.
“It feels really good to be out here helping the kids,” Blanton said. “When I was young, I used to look up to basketball players too.”
Following the drills, youth members gathered around for a question-and-answer with the Gamecocks. The South Carolina players answered a variety of questions and gave insight to the kids about their favorite sports and sports teams. Men’s basketball coach Frank Martin was also in attendance at Monday’s event.
“What matters is that we are able to put our players in places where they can interact with youth members,” Martin said. “That’s what we’re trying to do with this, and the response we have received has been phenomenal.”
The afternoon concluded with a group photo followed by a player autograph session. Deputy Katelyn Jasak, a public information officer for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, helped organize the event, and she discussed what it meant for the kids to have an opportunity to meet some of the South Carolina student-athletes.
“Events like this mean the world to these kids,” Jasak said. “This camp is all about character-building skills and teaching them about teamwork, and for these guys to take some time out of their day to come here means a lot.”
