KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The South Carolina track and field teams notched four first-place finishes, a total of 25 top 10 finishes and set 22 NCAA Regional Qualifying marks at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. Senior Aleen Bailey won the 100m and 200m dashes for the second straight year at the event.
In the 100m dash, South Carolina went 1-2 as Aleen Bailey took the race with a time of 11.40 while Erica Whipple was the runner-up with a time of 11.47. Khalilah Carpenter finished seventh with a time of 11.84. This is the second consecutive year that Bailey has won the 100m dash at the Sea Ray Relays. On the men’s side, Adrian Durant finished eighth with a time of 10.54.
Carolina finished 1-2-3 as Bailey continued her dominance in the 200m dash, winning the race with a time of 23.19, her second consecutive Sea Ray Relays 200m dash win. Erica Whipple placed second with a time of 23.36 with Miki Barber finishing third with a time of 23.46. Bailey has yet to place below first this season in the 100m and 200m dashes. On the men’s side, Martin Jackson finished seventh with a qualifying time of 21.16.
In the 400m dash, Lashinda Demus finished third with a qualifying time of 53.50. On the men’s side, Otis Harris won the 400m dash with a season-best qualifying mark of 45.76. Otukile Lekote placed sixth with a time of 47.11 while Jonathan Fortenberry finished eighth with a time of 47.40. All three of those marks were qualifying times.
In the 110m hurdles, the Gamecocks went 3-4-6-7 with Kenneth Ferguson placing third with a time of 13.90. Charles Ryan placed fourth with a season best 13.91 while Corey Taylor finished sixth with a time of 13.97. Fred Townsend rounded out the quartet, finishing seventh with a time of 14.01. All four of those marks were NCAA Qualifying times.
Ferguson won the 400m hurdles with a qualifying time of 49.89 while Charles Ryan finished 12th with a time of 52.93. On the women’s side, Shevon Stoddart placed seventh with a qualifying time of 59.50 while Tawana Watkins finished 13th with a qualifying mark of 1:00.50.
Ramomene ran a season best 2:12.49 in the 800m run, placing 25th. In the men’s 1,500m run, William Emase ran a qualifying time of 3:49.23 to place 12th.
Chelsea Hammond placed fourth in the high jump with a NCAA Qualifying mark of 5′ 7.75″.
Jim Mitchell placed 10th in the men’s shot put with a throw of 51’11.75.
In the pole vault, Jared Farabee was the runner up with a mark of 16′ 8.75″, a NCAA Qualifying mark and a season best for him. On the women’s side, Cheryl Terrio finished eighth with a height of 11′ 8″.
Antoinette Wilks placed third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.56 while Shevon Stoddart placed eighth with a time of 13.92, both of which are NCAA Qualifying marks.
South Carolina will wrap up the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville Saturday with field events beginning at 9:15 a.m. with the men’s hammer and running events starting at 1 p.m. with the women’s shuttle hurdle relay. Carolina will next compete at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn. on April 24-26.
