Columbia, S.C. – USC’s men tied for first at the South Carolina State Championships in a rain-shortened meet. Events were plagued by cold and overcast conditions throughout the day before giving way to a rainstorm just before dusk that caused the cancellation of the remainder of the meet.
Chuck Ryan, ranked 11th in the 110m hurdles, won the event with a time of 14.64. Teammate Taqiy Muhammed, who has spent the majority of the spring playing wide receiver during spring football practice, placed third.
Carolina’s men fared well in the field events. Adam Bishop and Tony Antonio finished 1-2 in the discus throw. Bishop’s mark of 47.78m edged Antonio’s throw of 47.73m. Antonio went on to a victory in the hammer throw while Bishop went on the place second in both the shot put and hammer throw.
Garry Martin won the javelin throw with a mark of 56.01m. Greig Cryer won the long jump with a mark of 7.22 and was followed by teammate Jason Jackamonis who finished second with a jump of 6.94m. Greg Royster finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.88m.
On the women’s side, Khaliah Carpenter won the 400m dash with a time of 57.14. Keri Groover placed second in the discus with a throw of 38.21m while India Odum took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 48.99m.
South Carolina travels to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Sea Ray Relays, beginning Thu., April 10. The meet lasts three days with competition concluding Sat., April 12.
