RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 2 South Carolina is in sixth place at the NCAA East Regional after carding a first-round 295 (+7). Senior Justine Dreher led the way with a 1-under 71 to tie for fifth after the first 18 holes. The Gamecocks are the top seed for the regional being played at NC State’s Lonnie Pool Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.

Dreher played in a group that featured three of the top eight individuals in the country. She was even at the turn and bogeyed No. 11, but a birdie on the par-3 14 and an eagle on the par-5 15 turned her back nine around. The senior is tied with three other players at 1-under after 18 holes.

Junior Sarah Schmelzel and sophomore Jia Xin Yang carded rounds of 74 (+2). After bogeying two of her first three holes, Schmelzel was even over the last 15 holes. Yang couldn’t find a rhythm on the front nine, making the turn at 3-over, but birdied two of her first three after the turn. The pair is tied for 21st.

After posting a birdie to start the day, junior Mary Fran Hillow made the turn at 1-over. In her final nine holes, Hillow was 3-over to finish the first round at 4-over (T48).

The Gamecocks dropped Katelyn Dambaugh’s score. The sophomore was even through her first five holes, but then recorded the first of six bogeys on No. 6 to end the day 6-over (78).

Bolstered by individual leader Madeline Sagstrom’s 68 (-4), LSU leads the team race at even-par. Host NC State is two strokes back at 2-over. Ohio State (+4), Campbell (+5) and Alabama (+6) follow to round out the top five. The top six teams advance to the NCAA Championship.

Just one stroke behind Sagstrom on the individual leaderboard is NC State’s Rachael Taylor at 3-under. Furman’s Taylor Totland and Alabama’s Emma Talley are tied for third at 2-under. Dreher is tied with three others at 1-under for fifth.

• Justine Dreher’s eagle on No. 15 was her second of the season and one of just two in today’s round.
