The 14th-ranked South Carolina Lady Gamecocks ended the third day of competition at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic by shooting a 306 and garnering a 10th place spot in the 17-team field. The Gamecocks recorded earlier rounds of 299 and 305 in the weekend event in Athens, Georgia, for the team’s seventh top 10 finish of the season.

Top-ranked Duke captured the Classic by firing a 288 Sunday and breaking out of a two-day tie with Florida. The Blue Devils won by 11 strokes. Elizabeth Janangelo of Duke claimed the title by carding two consecutive days of shooting 69 and finished at six-under-par, six strokes ahead of her nearest challenger, Lindsay Knowlton of Ohio State.

Sophomore Tiffany Catafygiotu provided the bright spot for South Carolina as the native of Greer, South Carolina tied for fourth with a three-over-par 219 for the weekend. Catafygiotu shot a 75 on Sunday with earlier rounds of 73 on Saturday and a career low round of 71 to open the tournament on Friday. It was the best finish ever for Catafygiotu who had previously recorded a tie for 21st place in the 2003 Lady Gamecock Classic.

“Obviously, I’m disappointed with where we finished today but we had our chances to turn it around today and shoot lower numbers but we couldn’t get the ball to drop.” said USC head coach Kristi Coggins. “We played with heart and soul and just never gave up. Tiffany Catafygiotu stepped up and played some great golf this weekend. It was fun to watch her and it was something good that came out of our tough weekend.”

USC was forced to play without two-time SEC champion Kristy McPherson sat out the Classic in order to reinstate her NCAA eligibility.

South Carolina will return to the course on April 18-20 in the 2003 SEC Championships in Lexington, Kentucky. The Gamecocks will try to defend its 2002 SEC Championship while Kristy McPherson will look to become the first three-time SEC champion ever.
