Senior Katherine Schmidt was named to the All-SEC Team in both equitation over fences and equitation on the flat.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Four Gamecock equestrians were named to the All-SEC Team and three more were named to the SEC All-Freshman Team, it was announced Monday by the league office.
Seniors Katherine Schmidt (equitation on the flat, equitation over fences), Amber Henter (equitation over fences), Sam Chiodo (horsemanship) and Layla Choate (reining) were named to the All-SEC Team.
Freshmen Megan Overberg (horsemanship), Bailey Walters (reining) and Paisley Roberts (reining) were named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
“We’re proud of all of our riders that were named to the two All-SEC Teams today,” South Carolina head coach Boo Major said. “As competitive as this league is, I think it says a lot about the talent that we have on this team. We have four seniors who have had tremendous careers so far, and a group of freshmen who have certainly made the most of their first year as student-athletes. I’m very proud of all of these young ladies and happy to see their hard work and commitment get recognized.”
Schmidt, who earned the nod in both equitation on the flat and equitation over fences, went 18-4 overall during the regular season. She went 10-2 with five MVPs during the regular season in equitation over fences, while posting an 8-2-2 mark with one MVP in equitation on the flat. Her 97 career victories is a program record. Including postseason, Schmidt leads the Gamecocks with 20 wins this season.
Henter went 10-1-1 with two MVPs for South Carolina during the regular season in equitation over fences, and went 1-1 at the SEC Championship. Including her flat record this season, she is 18-5-1 this season overall with four MVPs.
Chiodo led the entire western team during the regular season with a 10-1-1 record along with four MVPs. She was undefeated in SEC play, going 5-0-1 and went undefeated at home this season.
Choate, who currently sits at 10-2 on the season, has three reining MVPs this year and was the only Gamecock rider to earn an MVP award at the SEC Championship. Choate went 4-0 at home this season and posted a 5-1 record during league play.
Overberg went 1-1 in league play for the Gamecocks in horsemanship. Walters posted a 5-4-1 record during the regular season while fellow freshman Paisley Roberts posted a 2-2 SEC record in reining.
The Gamecocks return to action next week in Waco, Texas at the NCEA National Championship. South Carolina received a first round bye, and will face the New Mexico State/Fresno State winner at 9:30 a.m. ET in the quarterfinals on April 17.
