COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina junior guard Tiffany Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) earned a spot on the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 First Team, the organization announced today. She is one of five selections now eligible for Academic All-America honors, recognizing the combination of excellence on the court and in the classroom.
Mitchell, the undefeated Gamecocks’ first ever AP Preseason All-American, ranks among the SEC’s best in scoring, shooting percentage, assists and steals this season. Her 14.8 points per game is fourth-best in the league and comes on 51.6 percent field goal shooting. The reigning SEC Player of the Year built her reputation on excelling in several areas of the floor, and that versatility continues to come through this season as she is one of two SEC players ranked in the top 15 in points, steals (14th, 1.8/gm) and assists (15th, 2.8/gm). She is also among the nation’s top 3-point shooters, hitting 47.2 percent from outside the arc. With her 14 points at Georgia (Feb. 5), Mitchell moved into a tie for 22nd on the Gamecocks’ all-time scoring list at 1,157 points in her career.
A retailing major, Mitchell is the second Gamecock to earn a spot on the Academic All-District 4 team in as many seasons as Aleighsa Welch earned the honor last season.
No. 1/1 South Carolina (22-0, 10-0 SEC) steps out of conference play for its next game, traveling to No. 2/2 Connecticut for an 8 p.m. game on Mon., Feb. 9, on ESPN2.
