COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina sophomore defensive specialist Megan Kirkland has been named to the 2014 SEC Volleyball Community Service Team, the conference announced Wednesday.

A native of Lugoff, S.C., Kirkland has been a leader in community outreach during her two years with the Gamecocks. During this season, she worked the Carolina fan appreciation day and the Gamecock women in sports day, visiting with fans and signing autographs. She made several visits to Christopher Towers to play bingo with senior citizens. Kirkland has been a frequent visitor to the Ronald McDonald House, where she has cleaned the family room, baked cookies and goods for the residents and transported Halloween decorations. She has also served breakfast at Transitions homeless recovery center and painted walls, hung shutters and nailed down flooring for Habitat for Humanity.

The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 21 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight a student-athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts. The 11th annual women’s volleyball Community Service Team follows:
